Temple Defense

This game was made for the 48-hour GMTK (Game Maker’s Toolkit) in 2023 with the theme of "Role Reversal". Instead of playing as a treasure-seeking raider, you become the ancient temple, tasked with protecting your riches from cunning intruders. This unique concept challenges players to strategically activate a variety of booby traps in a strategic and time-sensitive way to stop the raiders.

Programming

The raiders’ AI and pathfinding needed to be simple and robust, allowing players to anticipate their movements and strategically activate traps. Each trap, designed with both player interaction and predictable consequences in mind, either eliminates raiders or obstructs their path, creating a dynamic puzzle experience. This gave interesting experience with prototyping games on a small timeframe.

Art Direction

The pixel art aesthetic, born from necessity, allowed for rapid iteration and a focus on gameplay clarity. Each trap and raider is visually distant, ensuring immediate recognition amidst the temple's intricate layout. This deliberate simplicity, combined with a tile-based level design, enabled efficient level creation and a visually engaging experience despite the limited timeframe.
